About red dates
Dried jujubes, sweet and slightly caramel, sold whole or pre-sliced. Sliced is quicker and gives up more sweetness; whole holds up better in a long soup. This pack is 300 g net. At the quantities below that is about 38 brews. That works out at S$5.05 per 100 g.
Also known as jujube, hong zao, hung jo, 红枣, chinese red dates, dried jujube.
What people use it for
In almost every household soup, in longan and red date tea, in steamed chicken, in porridge and in confinement cooking. Also the sweetener in a pot that otherwise has none.
How to prepare it
Whole dates: split or press them open so the flavour comes out, and simmer 30 minutes or more. Sliced: straight into a mug, 3 or 4 slices, 5 minutes.
Keeping it
Keep in cool and dry place
Questions people ask
Should I remove the seed?
For a drink, yes - the flavour comes out faster and it is easier to drink. For a long-boiled soup it makes little difference.
Whole or sliced?
Sliced for mugs and quick brews, whole for soups that boil for an hour or more.
Are Xinjiang red dates different?
They are larger and sweeter than the standard grade, which is why they cost more. Same fruit.
How far does this pack go?
At the quantity in the instructions above, about 38 brews from this pack.
Is the bigger pack cheaper?
This one works out at S$5.05 per 100 g. One Sunny lists most items in more than one size, so compare that figure rather than the pack price.
