About dried hawthorn
Dried slices of Chinese hawthorn, tart and fruity, the same fruit behind haw flakes and tanghulu. Sold as listed above.
Also known as shan zha, haw slices, 山楂, hawthorn berry, haw flakes.
What people use it for
Brewed with chrysanthemum and cassia seed as a sharp cooling drink, simmered into a sweet-sour soup, or used to tenderise meat in a braise.
How to prepare it
Five to six slices per mug, 5 to 10 minutes, rock sugar to taste. For a pot, a small handful to a litre and simmer 20 minutes.
Keeping it
Airtight and dry.

Is hawthorn sour?
Yes, quite sharply. Most people brew it with rock sugar or with sweeter items such as red dates.
