About kunlun snow chrysanthemum
A small red-brown flower grown high in the Kunlun mountains. It brews a deep amber-red rather than the pale yellow of ordinary chrysanthemum, and tastes fuller, closer to a light black tea. Sold as listed above.
Also known as snow daisy, xue ju, kunlun snow daisy, 昆仑雪菊, coreopsis tinctoria.
What people use it for
Drunk on its own, usually two or three flowers to a glass so the colour comes through. Often kept for guests because of how it looks in a clear pot.
How to prepare it
Two to four flowers in a 250 ml glass of just-boiled water, 2 to 3 minutes. It colours strongly, so start with fewer than you think.
Keeping it
Airtight, away from light, which fades the colour.
Questions people ask
How is snow chrysanthemum different from normal chrysanthemum?
Different plant. Snow chrysanthemum is smaller, brews red-amber instead of yellow, and has a stronger, less floral taste. People who find ordinary chrysanthemum too light usually prefer it.
How many flowers should I use?
Two to four in a mug. It colours the water far faster than white chrysanthemum.
